Aso Oke: Prestige Cloth from Nigeria

My husband Phillip Hamilton and I had the privilege of joining the CREW-St. Louis DEI Committee for a private tour of the Saint Louis Art Museum's exhibition, "Aso Oke: Prestige Cloth from Nigeria." This captivating showcase of Yoruba textiles, spanning from the early 19th to late 20th century, offered a unique glimpse into the ceremonial and celebratory traditions of Nigeria.

The tour, led by the generous curator and textile donor A. Patrick Irue, was incredible. Mr. Irue's personal insights into the creation process of these textiles and the deep ceremonial meanings embedded within them were extraordinary. The pieces we viewed, though only a small portion of his vast collection, were a testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic brilliance of the Yoruba people.

This experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of life, including art and cultural preservation. It was an honor to witness firsthand the beauty and history of these textiles, and I am grateful for the opportunity to expand my understanding of the world through the lens of Yoruba culture.

A heartfelt thank you to CREW St. Louis including Glenda Jehle, Rebecca Thessen, Helen Lee and A. Patrick Irue for an unforgettable evening of learning and appreciation.
